TPAA members produce fit-for-purpose treated commodities, using modern, environmentally responsible treatment plants. The plants are designed and operated under strict guidelines and conform with Australian Standards requirements. In addition, many operate to ISO 9000 quality procedures.

The commodities include timber for both residential and commercial construction where durability is an essential characteristic to ensure adequate service life performance. Regrowth, native forest, and plantation timbers are treated with appropriate preservatives to do the job.

Copper Chrome Arsenate (CCA)

CCA preservatives are used to protect timber from all types of biological deterioration, including insects, termites, decay, and marine borers.  CCA treated timber is very widely used and can be seen in fencing, patios, landscaping,  poles and posts (particularly in vineyards and the like) and marinas.

Creosote / Pigment Emulsified Creosote (PEC)

Creosote and PEC are both heavy duty oil-borne preservatives used to protect such commodities as poles, sleepers, marine piles, against decay, insect and borer attack.

Light Organic Solvent Preservative (LOSP)

LOSPs are used to protect relatively high cost commodities such as joinery in above ground use only. They may contain fungicides, insecticides and water repellent chemicals (not necessarily all at once).

Remedial Preservatives

These products are generally applied to exposed timber that results from cutting, drilling or machining timber on site. They provide some measure of protection against decay, termites, and water ingress. In addition, this group of preservatives also contains products for the home-handyman and for commercial application by, for example, the utility companies, to poles for application to remedy in situ decay and insect attack.

Boron

This chemical is used primarily in Australia to protect timber, such as house frames, against wood-boring insects and termites (south of the Tropic of Capricorn). It is particularly effective against the powder post beetle that attacks some starch rich hardwoods, and the furniture beetle that can occur mainly in softwoods.

ACQ

ACQ is an alternative form of water-borne treatment used to protect outdoor timber structures from fungal decay and insect attack.  It can be seen in a variety of applications, including decking, gazebos, fencing, outdoor furniture, trellis and playground equipment.

Tanalised E

Tanalith E is a copper based water-borne preservative which provides protection against most decay types and termites.  It also provides protection against copper tolerant organisms such as brown rot fungi.
