Boron
Boron preservatives are used primarily in
Australian house frames to protect the timber against wood-boring
insects, such as the Lyctid beetles. They are also
particularly effective against the powder post beetle that attacks
some starch rich hardwoods, and the furniture beetle that can occur
mainly in softwoods. Specific formulations of boron are also used
south of the Tropic of Capricorn to protect softwood framing against
termites
Boron-based preservatives are usually applied by dipping unseasoned
timber into treatment solutions, by spraying or brushing the
treatment chemical onto the wood, or by vacuum pressure impregnation
of seasoned softwood timber. They should not be used where the
treated timber comes into ground contact as the boron may leach out
again.
Key Benefits
- cost effective and easy to apply
- diffuses deeply into unseasoned (green) timber
- prevents most forms of insect attack
