Q.   How do I dispose of waste or spent treated timber?

A.   Re-using or recycling treated timber is acceptable, provided the timber is utilised in similar hazard level applications, making sure to take the same precautions as for new treated timber.

Small quantities of treated timber wastes, such as off-cuts generated during home projects may be disposed of through normal household waste collection services or at local landfills. Treated timber should not be placed in any green waste or garden organics recycling bins.

Trade users of treated timber should be able to dispose of off-cuts and redundant pieces through normal commercial waste collection services or at local landfills. However, regulations and local services vary so it is advisable to contact the local council, the state environment protection agency, or your treated timber supplier for advice on appropriate disposal or recycling options.

Do not:

  • compost treated timber wastes or use them for mulch or animal bedding
  • burn treated timber wastes unless in an appropriately approved facility

FURTHER INFORMATION

Disposal and recycling regulations and local services vary from location to location. Further advice on such matters may be obtained from your local council, the state environment protection agency, or your treated timber supplier.
