Q.   How do I know that I am purchasing properly treated timber?

A.   To be certain that that the timber is of a quality to meet its intended use, follow simple guidelines when purchasing or specifying treated timber:

Timber treated should conform to the approved treating industry standards set out in Australian Standards and supported by the TPAA and its members.

You will know that the timber conforms if it carries a mark that is a set of numbers and a Hazard Class H number. The H number will tell you where the treated timber may be applied - above the ground or in the ground. The other numbers relate to the preservative type and the treatment plant where it was produced. The mark may also be supplemented by a company logo.

An example of a typical mark (or brand) would be:

099  10  H4

The first number is the treatment plant number, the second identifies the preservative used and the third, most important, tells you where the treated timber may be used; in the example given the treated timber is fit for use in ground contact.

Finally, always choose treated timber that is visibly clean and free of surface residue.
