Q.
Does treated
timber need painting, staining, waterproofing or maintaining?
A.
It may be a good
idea to apply a water repellent sealer to slow the initial
shrinkage that may occur as the timber comes into
equilibrium with the environment (see manufacturer's
recommendations for details on application). Some
preservatives of course already provide a measure of water
repellency. Using paints, stains, varnishes, etc. will
almost certainly complement the preservative and enhance
treated commodity's service life.
Treated timber should be cleaned and re-sealed
yearly to maintain optimum appearance. Unprotected treated
timber will begin to change color as a result of the wood's
reaction to ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun. Sealants with
UV inhibitors will slow the color change.
